The short answer: how do you get your business found in AI search?
To improve your chances of being found in ChatGPT Search, Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, make your business easy to discover, understand and verify. Publish genuinely useful pages, explain exactly what you offer and where you operate, keep business details consistent, earn real customer reviews and credible mentions, and make sure search crawlers can access your website.
This process is commonly called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). GEO is not a shortcut that guarantees an AI recommendation. It is a practical way to strengthen your website, business information and reputation so search systems have reliable information to use.
This guide is written for Indian small-business owners, local service providers, students and beginners who want to understand how AI-powered search works. You do not need to be a developer to start. You need clear information, a useful website and a repeatable improvement process.
What is GEO in simple words?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It describes the work of making information about a business clear, accurate, accessible and useful to AI-powered search experiences.
Imagine a customer asking ChatGPT, Google or Perplexity: “Which digital marketing institute in Surat is suitable for a complete beginner?” The system may retrieve information from websites and other sources, compare what it finds and produce an answer with links. Your job is not to trick the system. Your job is to publish information that helps it understand what your business does and gives people a good reason to trust it.
GEO does not replace Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Google’s current guidance says the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search to be considered as a supporting link in those experiences. Google also says there are no additional technical requirements or special AI schema types required for AI Overviews.
A useful way to think about it: SEO helps search engines discover and rank useful pages. GEO focuses on making your business and its expertise understandable and citable in AI-generated answers. The two depend on many of the same foundations.
How Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search and Perplexity differ
These products do not all work in exactly the same way. Their interfaces, retrieval systems and source selection can change. Do not assume that one ranking or one crawler setting controls every platform.
| AI search surface | What to understand | Practical priority |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Google Search systems and indexed web pages. Google says the usual Search eligibility and SEO fundamentals apply. | Keep pages indexable, useful, technically accessible and supported by accurate business information. |
| ChatGPT Search | Web retrieval and sources that ChatGPT can access. OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as its search crawler. | Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want search discovery; keep key facts clear and corroborated. |
| Perplexity | Web retrieval with visible citations and Perplexity’s own crawler. | Allow PerplexityBot where appropriate and publish pages that answer real questions with evidence. |
Step 1: Run a simple AI visibility audit
Before changing your website, establish what AI systems currently say about your business. Open ChatGPT Search, Google Search and Perplexity. Ask the same questions in each product and record the answers. Repeat the checks periodically because responses can vary.
Use customer-style prompts such as: “What does [Business Name] do?”, “Who offers [service] in [city]?”, “What should I check before hiring a [service provider]?”, “How much does [service] usually cost in [city]?” and “Compare [Business Name] with other options for [specific need].”
For each prompt, record four things: whether your business is mentioned; whether its name, location and services are correct; which competitors are mentioned; and which websites or profiles are cited. In Perplexity and ChatGPT Search, open the cited links. In Google, inspect the sources linked from the AI Overview when one appears.
Do not treat one answer as a ranking report. AI responses are not fixed positions. Use the audit to find inaccurate facts, missing pages and credible sources that customers and search systems already consult.
Step 2: Make your business facts consistent everywhere
AI systems and customers need to identify the same business across different websites. Create one approved business-information sheet and use it as the source of truth.
Include the exact business name, address or service area, phone number, website, opening hours, services, current pricing or pricing method, founder or owner details where relevant, and the correct enquiry or booking method. For local businesses, Name, Address and Phone number are often called NAP details.
Keep these details consistent on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect where relevant, social profiles and legitimate industry directories. Do not create duplicate listings or add keywords to your business name if they are not part of its real-world name.
For a local business, complete the Google Business Profile carefully. Choose an accurate primary category, add relevant services, upload genuine photographs, maintain current hours, respond professionally to reviews and keep contact details up to date. A profile is not a substitute for a useful website; both should agree.
Step 3: Make your website easy to crawl and understand
Your important business information should be available as readable page content. Do not put essential service descriptions, locations, prices or answers only inside images, PDFs or inaccessible interactive elements. Use clear page titles, descriptive headings, internal links and mobile-friendly layouts.
Use HTTPS, fix broken links, avoid accidental noindex directives and make sure important pages can be reached through normal internal links. Submit your XML sitemap through Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. These steps support discovery and technical health; they do not guarantee indexing or AI citations.
Check your robots.txt file and your hosting, firewall or content-delivery-network rules. Google Search uses Googlebot access for its AI Search features. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT Search. Perplexity documents its own crawler, PerplexityBot. Bingbot is relevant to Bing’s search ecosystem.
Important distinction: OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot is for search discovery. GPTBot is a separate crawler setting associated with potential model training. A website owner can make a separate decision about each. Do not block or allow bots blindly; understand the business and content-use implications first.
If you are not technical, ask your developer or hosting provider to review robots.txt, page indexing, server responses and bot-protection rules. Never paste a robots.txt rule from a random blog without checking what it does.
Step 4: Use structured data correctly—not as a magic trick
Structured data is code that describes information already visible on a page. It can help search engines interpret entities and page types. It does not force an AI system to recommend a business, and incorrect markup can create confusion.
Depending on the real content, a website may use Organization or LocalBusiness markup for business identity, Service markup for services, Course markup for genuine course information, and Article markup for a blog post. Use author details and dates accurately. Add sameAs links only to official profiles that genuinely represent the same organization or person.
A key rule: structured data must match the visible page. Do not mark up invented reviews, ratings, course fees, locations or qualifications. Only use review or aggregate-rating markup when the reviews are genuine and the implementation follows the relevant search-engine guidelines.
FAQ content can still be useful to readers. However, do not add FAQ schema expecting a special AI Overview advantage. Google says there is no special schema required for AI Overviews. Focus on clear, useful answers first.
Step 5: Write answer-first content that solves a real problem
A reader should get the main answer quickly. Put a concise, complete answer near the beginning of each important page. Then explain the process, evidence, limitations and next steps.
Use this simple page structure: direct answer; who the service is for; location or service area; what is included; process and timeline; pricing or how pricing is decided; proof such as genuine reviews or case studies; frequently asked questions; and a clear contact method.
For example, a vague line such as “We provide world-class digital solutions” tells a customer very little. A clearer description says what the company does, which customers it serves, where it operates and what outcomes it measures. Be specific, but never invent results or make guarantees.
Use headings based on questions customers actually ask. A page about Google Ads management could answer “What does Google Ads management include?”, “What affects the monthly fee?”, “How is lead quality measured?” and “What access does an agency need?” Answer each question directly before adding detail.
One focused page per important topic is usually easier to maintain than one enormous page covering every service. Build supporting pages only when you have enough useful information to make each page genuinely distinct. Avoid creating dozens of near-identical city pages with only the location name changed.
What does a strong business description look like?
A useful business description identifies the entity, its category, location, audience and main services. For example: “MaxLeadz Education is an offline digital marketing training institute in City Light, Surat. It teaches beginners, students, freshers, career switchers and business owners through practical learning in AI tools, content creation, Meta Ads, Google Ads, SEO, websites and analytics. Founder Utsav Daga leads the classroom sessions in small batches.”
This description is based on the current MaxLeadz Education website. Keep it updated if the programmes, location or delivery model changes. Do not copy this example if it does not describe your own business accurately.
Step 6: Build trust beyond your own website
Your website is only one source of information about your business. Customers may also check Google reviews, professional profiles, industry directories, local publications, partner websites, videos and community discussions.
Prioritise genuine evidence: ask recent customers for honest reviews; keep profiles complete; publish useful original research or practical guides; contribute expert commentary to relevant publications; maintain an accurate LinkedIn company page; and participate in industry communities when you can add real value.
Do not buy reviews, write reviews for customers, create fake directory listings or post repetitive promotional comments. A large number of low-quality mentions is not a substitute for a credible reputation. The goal is consistent, verifiable information—not manufactured popularity.
For local businesses, reviews are most useful when they describe a real experience in the customer’s own words. Never script a review or pressure someone to include specific keywords. You can ask for honest feedback and make the process easy.
A practical 30-day GEO plan for a small business
Week 1 — Audit and access: test ten customer questions in ChatGPT Search, Google and Perplexity; record mentions and source links; review your main website pages; check Search Console and your sitemap; ask a developer to inspect crawler access if needed.
Week 2 — Fix business facts: standardise your business name, address, phone, hours and services; update Google Business Profile; review relevant Bing and Apple listings; remove or correct outdated information; check that your contact method works.
Week 3 — Improve important pages: choose the five pages most likely to generate enquiries; add a direct answer near the top; clarify audience, service area, process and pricing logic; add real FAQs; improve internal links; check mobile usability and page indexing.
Week 4 — Build credible proof: request honest feedback from recent customers; identify relevant local or industry directories; approach suitable publications or partners with useful expertise; publish one original resource such as a checklist, calculator or local market guide; record a baseline for future comparison.
This is a starting plan, not a promise of visibility in 30 days. Search engines and AI products control crawling, indexing, retrieval and display. Your job is to improve the quality and accessibility of the information you publish.
Step 7: Measure visibility and business outcomes
Track whether your brand appears for a fixed set of customer questions, whether the facts are accurate, which pages are cited, and which competitors or third-party sources appear. Save the prompt, date, platform and result so monthly comparisons are meaningful.
Also measure website sessions, enquiries, phone calls, form submissions, bookings and sales. Use Google Search Console for search performance and Google Analytics 4 or another analytics platform for website behaviour and conversions. Where possible, use consistent UTM parameters on campaigns and track lead quality in your CRM.
Do not confuse an AI mention with a customer. A mention may create awareness without generating a click. A click may not become a qualified enquiry. A qualified enquiry may not become a sale. Connect marketing reports to the business outcome that matters.
Common GEO mistakes beginners should avoid
Expecting guaranteed AI recommendations; blocking crawlers without understanding the consequences; publishing generic AI-generated pages without original value; using inconsistent business information; hiding key facts in images; creating thin duplicate location pages; inventing reviews or case studies; adding schema that does not match visible content; and treating llms.txt as a proven ranking factor.
Google’s current guidance says site owners do not need special AI text files or special schema to appear in AI Overviews. An llms.txt file is an optional emerging convention, not a replacement for useful content, technical SEO or trusted information. Do not spend your first month on it while basic website and business information remains incomplete.
A beginner-friendly explanation for students and parents
GEO is a useful example of how digital marketing is changing. A business must now think about traditional search, maps, reviews, websites and AI-powered discovery. Students who understand SEO, content, analytics and AI tools can learn to support these activities for real businesses.
Parents evaluating a digital marketing course should look beyond claims about “AI marketing”. Ask who teaches the classes, whether students practise on real assignments, what projects they build, how progress is assessed, what the full fee includes and what career support actually means. A certificate alone does not prove practical ability.
Students should learn the fundamentals before relying on automation. Understand customer intent, search behaviour, content quality, website structure, analytics and ethical marketing. Then use AI tools to research, organise and improve work—not to publish unchecked claims.
