Quick answer: Schema markup labels the meaning of webpage information for machines. Use the type that matches the page, keep every detail accurate and visible, and validate the JSON-LD. It can support search understanding and eligibility for supported search features, but it does not guarantee rankings or rich results.
Introduction: What schema markup does
Schema markup is structured data that describes the meaning of a webpage in a format search engines can interpret. It can identify an organisation, local business, article, product, offer, author, address or other entity. It does not change the visible design of a page.
For a beginner, think of schema as a clear label attached to website information. A visitor may read “MaxLeadz Education teaches digital marketing in Surat.” Structured data can describe the organisation, its website and its location in a machine-readable format.
The direct answer: choose schema that matches the page’s real purpose, add accurate JSON-LD, keep it consistent with visible content, and validate it. Schema can help search engines understand a page and may make it eligible for supported search features. It does not guarantee rankings, AI citations, rich results or star ratings.
This guide is written for students, parents, beginners, Indian business owners and website managers who want to understand LocalBusiness, Article/BlogPosting and Product/Offer schema without needing advanced coding knowledge.
1. What is schema markup?
Schema markup uses the vocabulary maintained at Schema.org to describe entities and their properties. Examples include a business name, postal address, telephone number, article headline, author, product name, price and availability.
Normal HTML presents content to people. Structured data adds explicit context. It helps systems distinguish a business address from an ordinary sentence, an article author from a person mentioned in the article, and a product price from a number in a paragraph.
Schema.org defines the vocabulary. Google Search documents which structured-data types and properties can support particular Google search features. These are related but not identical: a property can be valid in Schema.org without being eligible for a Google rich result.
Schema is one part of technical SEO and entity clarity. It should support useful content, accurate business information, crawlable pages, good site structure and a consistent brand identity. It is not a shortcut around these fundamentals.
2. How schema markup works
-
Identify the main subject of the page: an organisation, a local location, an article or a product.
-
Choose the most specific Schema.org type that truthfully describes that subject.
-
Add properties that are accurate and supported by the visible page, such as name, address, headline, author, price or availability.
-
Place the JSON-LD in the page HTML. Google supports JSON-LD in the head or body and generally recommends it because it is easier to maintain.
-
Test the markup, publish it, then use Google Search Console and URL Inspection to check how Google sees the page.
3. Which schema should you use?
| Page purpose | Possible schema type | Important information |
|---|---|---|
| Business or institute identity | Organization / EducationalOrganization | Official name, URL, logo, contact and sameAs profiles |
| Physical local business location | Appropriate LocalBusiness subtype | Name, address, phone, hours, URL and other true details |
| Blog post or editorial guide | Article / BlogPosting | Headline, author, image, publish date and modified date |
| Individual product page | Product + Offer | Product name, image, description, price, currency and availability |
| Course information page | Course or EducationalOccupationalProgram where appropriate | Course name, provider, description and real programme details |
| Product or category listing | Usually ItemList or collection structure if useful | Do not label an entire category page as one Product |
One page can describe more than one genuinely relevant entity. For example, a blog article may have BlogPosting markup and BreadcrumbList markup. Avoid adding unrelated types simply to increase the amount of structured data.
4. LocalBusiness schema explained
LocalBusiness structured data describes a real business location or local service business. It can communicate details such as the official business name, address, telephone number, opening hours and website. Google explains that this information may help it understand local business details shown across Search and Maps.
Use it on a page that represents the actual location or business. Common candidates include a location page, a store page, a clinic page or a contact page with complete business details. A homepage may also describe the main business entity when that is its purpose.
Choose the most specific valid type that matches the real business. Do not invent a subtype. Important distinction for education brands: EducationalOrganization is a Schema.org type for an educational organisation, but it is not itself a subtype of LocalBusiness. Use EducationalOrganization to describe the institute as an education provider. Use a LocalBusiness type only when the business genuinely fits that type and its hierarchy.

"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "YOUR STREET ADDRESS",
"addressLocality": "Surat",

}]
}
</script>
This is a template, not ready-to-publish business data. Replace every placeholder with verified information. Remove properties you cannot confirm. Do not publish assumed opening hours, coordinates, price ranges, images or social profile URLs.
Educational organisation example for an institute
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "EducationalOrganization",
"name": "MaxLeadz Education",
"url": "https://education.maxleadz.in/",
"telephone": "+91 63572 52001",

"addressLocality": "Surat",
"addressRegion": "Gujarat",
"postalCode": "395007",
"addressCountry": "IN"
}
}
</script>
This example uses the organisation details currently displayed on the MaxLeadz Education website. Confirm that the address and phone number remain current before publishing. Add a logo or social profile links only when you have the exact public URLs and they represent the same organisation.
5. Article and BlogPosting schema explained
Article schema describes editorial content such as a blog post, news story or guide. BlogPosting is a more specific Schema.org type commonly used for blog articles. It can identify the headline, author, publisher, representative image and publication or modification dates.
Google’s Article documentation lists properties such as headline, author, image, datePublished and dateModified as recommended information. These properties help Google understand the article; they do not guarantee a special search appearance.
Use Article or BlogPosting on the article itself. Do not use Article as the primary description of a homepage, a service page or a product page simply because those pages contain text.
BlogPosting JSON-LD example
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "BlogPosting",
"headline": "Schema Markup for Beginners: LocalBusiness, Article and Product Schema Explained",
"description": "A beginner-friendly guide to schema markup and JSON-LD for Indian websites.",
"image": "https://education.maxleadz.in/REPLACE-WITH-ACTUAL-FEATURED-IMAGE.jpg",
"datePublished": "2026-11-03T10:00:00+05:30",
"dateModified": "2026-11-03T10:00:00+05:30",
"author": {
"@type": "Person",
"name": "Utsav Daga"
},
"publisher": {
"@type": "Organization",
"name": "MaxLeadz Education",
"url": "https://education.maxleadz.in/"
},
"mainEntityOfPage": {
"@type": "WebPage",
"@id": "https://education.maxleadz.in/blog/schema-markup-for-beginners-localbusiness-article-product"
}
}
</script>
Replace the image URL with the actual published, crawlable featured image. Set datePublished to the first publication date. Update dateModified only when you make a meaningful content update. Do not reset the date just to make an old article look new.
The author name should match the visible byline. If you have a genuine author profile page, you can add its URL to the author object. Do not invent an author biography page or social profile.
6. Product and Offer schema explained
Product schema describes an individual product. Offer describes the commercial offer for that product, including price, currency and availability. Google has separate documentation for product snippets and merchant listings, and their eligibility requirements are not identical.
Product rich results are designed for pages focused on one product or variants of the same product. A broad category page such as “all courses” or “all shoes” should not be marked up as if the entire page were one product. Merchant listing experiences require that shoppers can purchase the product from the page and that the offer details meet Google’s requirements.
A digital course is not automatically a Product just because it has a fee. First decide what the page represents. A course information page may be better described with Course or EducationalOccupationalProgram vocabulary. Use Product + Offer only when the page genuinely presents a purchasable product and meets the applicable Google product-feature rules.
Product + Offer JSON-LD starter template
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "Product",
"name": "YOUR PRODUCT NAME",
"image": "https://www.example.com/images/product.jpg",
"description": "A factual description visible on this product page.",
"sku": "YOUR-REAL-SKU",
"brand": {
"@type": "Brand",
"name": "YOUR BRAND"
},
"offers": {
"@type": "Offer",
"url": "https://www.example.com/product-page/",
"priceCurrency": "INR",
"price": "ACTUAL-PRICE",
"availability": "https://schema.org/InStock",
"itemCondition": "https://schema.org/NewCondition"
}
}
</script>
Replace the sample values with the exact product information shown to customers. Use the correct availability value. Remove SKU if no real SKU exists. Do not invent a brand, discount, stock status or price.
Ratings and reviews: use real evidence
Add Review or AggregateRating only when genuine reviews or ratings are visible on the page and comply with Google’s review policies. The rating value and review count must match the content users can see. Do not create sample ratings to make a search result look more attractive. Self-serving review markup for an organisation’s own LocalBusiness or Organization is not eligible for Google review snippets.
7. How to add JSON-LD to a website
-
Choose one page and write down its purpose. Do not start by generating schema for the entire website.
-
Collect verified details from the page and the business owner. Check spelling, phone number, address, dates, price, image URL and availability.
-
Select the appropriate Schema.org type and review Google’s documentation if you want a Google search feature.
-
Create the JSON-LD. Keep quotation marks, commas, braces and square brackets valid. JSON does not allow comments or trailing commas.
-
Add the script to the page HTML, usually in the head or body. A CMS custom-code field or a reliable SEO plugin can also add it.
-
Check whether your theme or plugin already outputs the same schema. Avoid duplicate or conflicting entities.
-
Validate the code, publish it, inspect the live URL and monitor Search Console.
8. How to validate schema markup
Google Rich Results Test
Use the Rich Results Test to check whether supported Google rich-result features can be detected and whether required properties or technical errors are present. It does not validate every Schema.org type, and a valid test does not guarantee that Google will display a rich result.
Schema Markup Validator
Use Schema Markup Validator to check Schema.org vocabulary and structured-data syntax more broadly. This is useful when a type is valid in Schema.org but does not correspond to a Google rich-result feature.
Google Search Console URL Inspection
After publishing, inspect the live URL in Google Search Console. Confirm that Google can access the page and see the rendered content. Check relevant enhancement reports where available, fix errors and monitor warnings. Recrawling and reprocessing can take time.

9. Common schema mistakes beginners should avoid
-
Wrong type: marking a blog post as Product or a service page as Article.
-
Invented information: adding an address, opening time, SKU, price or rating that is not real.
-
Hidden information: describing content in JSON-LD that visitors cannot see on the page.
-
Category-page Product markup: describing a list of unrelated products as one product.
-
Fake reviews: adding ratings or review counts that are not genuine and visible.
-
Duplicate markup: allowing a plugin and a manual script to publish conflicting versions of the same entity.
-
Outdated details: leaving an old phone number, closed hours, previous price or unavailable stock in the code.
-
Invalid JSON: missing quotation marks, mismatched braces or an extra comma.
-
Assuming every valid Schema.org type creates a Google rich result: Google supports only specific structured-data features and can choose not to show them.
10. A practical schema plan for a beginner website
| Order | Page or template | Suggested action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Homepage | Describe the main organisation or brand accurately. |
| 2 | Contact or location page | Add accurate local location information where relevant. |
| 3 | Blog article template | Use Article or BlogPosting with accurate author, dates and image. |
| 4 | Individual product page | Use Product and Offer only when the page meets the product requirements. |
| 5 | Breadcrumbs | Add BreadcrumbList where it accurately reflects the visible site hierarchy. |
Do not add every schema type to every page. Build a small, consistent entity graph: the organisation is the publisher or provider; the article has an author and publisher; a product belongs to a brand and has a real offer. Use stable URLs and identifiers when you know them.
11. Schema markup, AI search and entity understanding
Structured data can make relationships between entities more explicit. For example, an article can identify its author and publisher, while an organisation can have a stable name, website and contact information. This may help search systems interpret the page’s context.
However, schema markup is not a guaranteed way to appear in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity or any other answer engine. These systems use multiple signals and can retrieve, interpret or ignore structured data depending on their systems and the query.
A stronger foundation for AI-readable content is straightforward: answer the reader’s question near the beginning; use clear headings; define technical terms; name relevant entities accurately; cite primary sources; keep facts current; publish original explanations; and ensure that the visible page agrees with its structured data.
Practical insight: write the page for a person first, then describe the same page accurately in schema. If the article says one thing and the JSON-LD says another, structured data becomes a source of confusion rather than clarity.
12. What parents and students should understand
Schema markup is a useful technical SEO skill, but it is not the whole of digital marketing. Students should understand how a website is structured, how search engines discover pages, how to write helpful content, how local business information is managed, and how to measure organic search performance.
Parents evaluating a digital marketing course can ask whether students practise website setup, technical SEO, structured data, Google Search Console and content publishing. A course should explain both the benefits and limitations of schema rather than promising instant rankings or guaranteed AI visibility.

Conclusion: start with accuracy, not quantity
Schema markup helps search engines interpret the entities and information on a webpage. LocalBusiness can describe a qualifying local business, EducationalOrganization can describe an education provider, BlogPosting can describe a blog article, and Product with Offer can describe an individual purchasable product.
Start with one important page. Choose the correct type, add only verified information, make sure the visible page agrees with the markup, and test it before and after publishing. A small amount of accurate structured data is more useful than a large amount of misleading or duplicated code.
For students and business owners, schema markup is one practical part of technical SEO. Learn it alongside content strategy, website fundamentals, analytics and search performance.
